Tuesday Tunes #8

Beres Hammond

It’s time for ‘Tuesday Tunes’, where I do my best to bring you great music that you may not have heard before in reggae, dancehall, and soca.

On Tuesdays, I’ll introduce you to a song, riddim, or music artist that you don’t hear so frequently on Western sources and tell you how I discovered them myself.

When you listen to these tunes, put some headphones on or plug into a proper speaker – TVs, phones, tablets, or laptops simply won’t do these songs justice!

My Discovery

Way back when, I was on a trip to Anguilla with just my dad, and my aunty would let him drive her car which had Reggae Gold 2000 in the CD player. One of the first tracks on the album was ‘They Gonna Talk’, and it was the first time I realised I was listening to Beres Hammond.

I am pretty sure I had listened to his music before, but this was the first time I paid attention and started searching for his songs!

But there’s one more reason why Beres Hammond’s music runs through my veins. The first song I heard when I got in to Stacey’s car for the first time was Rockaway, and from there I knew it was a match made in heaven.

We finally saw him live in 2018, and it was one of my most memorable experiences ever.

The Artist

Beres Hammond is one of those artists that you may not know by name, but you may have heard one of his many songs on the radio or a playlist without realising. This man has been active since 1972, and I was surprised to learn that his worth is only around $2,000,000.

The only way to describe Beres Hammond is uplifting – he always brings positive vibes to every song, social media post, and his concerts. He also brings loyalty, referring to his fans as family, and travelling the world with the Harmony House band on every tour.

Given the current pandemic, I just hope we have an opportunity to see him live again before he retires from music!

The Music

Just like Buju Banton’s portfolio, it was really difficult to find just a few songs, so I’ve narrowed it down to 6. You have no idea how hard this was! I originally wrote ‘down to 5’, kept finding songs, and told myself to be ruthless and pick 6!

I’m Alive
All Love

100% Love

All I Need To Know
Cry Cry Baby
No Goodbye

The Concerts

I told you I can’t stop!
