Promises (feat. Romain Virgo) – Shaggy
It’s time for ‘Tuesday Tunes’, where I do my best to bring you great music that you may not have heard before in reggae, dancehall, and soca.
On Tuesdays, I’ll introduce you to a song, riddim, or music artist that you don’t hear so frequently on Western sources and tell you how I discovered them myself.
When you listen to these tunes, put some headphones on or plug into a proper speaker – TVs, phones, tablets, or laptops simply won’t do these songs justice!
Most people in the UK or US will remember Shaggy for ‘Angel’ or ‘It Wasn’t Me’, but for people in black or mixed households, 90s babies like myself would be dancing in their nappies to ‘Oh Carolina’ or ‘Boombastic’ and have grown up with Shaggy being a part of our understanding of music ever since we can remember!
For this reason, Shaggy has always been on my radar. He is one of many reggae & dancehall artists that I actively seek out for new music, and that’s how I found ‘Promises’.
This tune has something for everyone, whether you’re listening for meaningful lyrics or a reggae vibe, and Shaggy & Romain Virgo’s voices complement each other perfectly.
It makes me think of the summer, good times, and Stacey – what more could I want?!
